What is a superfood?

A superfood is essentially a nutritionally dense food item, which is able to supply a very decent amount of nutrients within a small number of calories.

These food items contain high volumes of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Antioxidants are natural molecules that are present in certain foods.

They help neutralizing free radicals in the human body. Free radicals are natural byproducts of energy production that can wreak havoc on the body.

Due to the presence of these elements superfoods are able to provide the following health benefits:

  • cancer
  • arthritis
  • stroke
  • respiratory diseases
  • immune deficiency
  • emphysema
  • Parkinson’s disease


But you must understand the fact that these foods alone are of no use, if you aren’t following a healthy and balanced diet.

It is recommended to incorporate superfoods into your diet as it will keep you full and healthy without supplying you with excess calories.

Research has shown that superfoods high in antioxidants and flavonoids help to prevent  heartproblems and cancer, as well as improving immunity system and decreasing inflammation risks.

Berries

The higher levels of flavonoids present in berries have been proved to lower the risk of a heart attack and various other heart diseases.

A few commonly available superfood that is berries include, blueberries, raspberries, tart cherries, cranberries, and goji berries.

Soy

Another commonly available superfood Soy have a high concentration of isoflavones, a variant of phytochemical.

Phytochemicals are plant compounds that occur naturally in various types of plants.

Some studiessuggest that isoflavones in soy help in reducing the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or cholesterol in the human blood.

Being a superfood soy helps in preventing age-related memory problems.

Soy isoflavones can also decrease bone loss and improve bone mineral density during menopause, as well as decreasing menopausal conditions.

Tea:

With very few calories, tea keeps you hydrated and is a great source of antioxidants

Catechins, a powerful antioxidant found originally in green tea, have beneficial anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.

A recent study shows that both green and white tea have properties that reduce stress levels. It is undoubtedly the most commonly available superfood item, that has so many health benefits.

Salmon

The high concentration of omega-3 fatty acid in salmon and similar fatty fish, such as trout and herring, can reduce the chances of abnormal heart issues, reduce bad cholesterol and slow the growth of arterial plaque.

Dark chocolate

studies have found that dark chocolate has a high concentration of flavonoids. Flavonoids show antioxidant activity, prevent various heart problems and few types of cancer, and boost the immunity system.

The element of chocolate specifically accountable for these health benefits is cacao powder. Manufacturers derive this from cacao beans. But keep in mind chocolate also has a number of other added ingredients and a good amount of sugar.

Leafy greens

People often consider kale, spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, and collard greens as superfood leafy greens. These foods are rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, and many B vitamins.
